Family forms - The changing family
The "ideal image" of a family consists of mother, father and child. Due to new modern lifestyles and social change (development of family and society), the traditional family model is experiencing a decline in numbers. The status of the family and individual lifestyles have changed in recent years.
The number of weddings is declining. While in 1950 there were about 750,452 marriages, in 2020 there were only 373,310 marriages in Germany. This is also due to the fact that marriage is no longer a necessary basis for living today. The classic provision community is no longer necessary, since women are also educated and capable of gainful employment. There is no longer any financial dependence on men.
In addition, it can be seen that today's marriages are more unstable than in the past. In 1960, the divorce rate in Germany was 10.66%; in 2019, the divorce rate was 35.79%.
Reconciliation of family and career
In order to improve the family's financial situation, many women with children work in addition to their husbands. This also determines the time frame available for family life. One challenge here is to find a balance between family, partnership and work. In 2019, almost ¾ of mixed-sex couples with children under 15 were employed, the father full-time and the mother part-time.
This clearly shows that the old image of women has undergone a change. Professional expectations and financial constraints often lead to a two-earner household.
Modern family forms
Today's family forms are more diverse and individual than ever before. The way of life has changed in the field. Although the traditional family model is still a favourite, postmodern family forms have developed in recent years.
The extended family, which used to be common, has been replaced by the nuclear family. In this form, the financial situation of the family plays a major role. The more children are born, the higher the financial outlay and the personal restrictions also increase.
Senior citizens used to live in an extended family with the children in one house and were fed and cared for there. Today, many people use the option of a retirement home to accommodate grandparents, due to care issues and time challenges.
A report by planet wissen shows that child rearing has changed. While in the past the focus was on an authoritarian upbringing with obedience, today the focus is on democratic education. Children should learn to think freely, make their own decisions and live together as equals. But limits and rules should also be taken into account in this form of child education.
